Operation Pacific Waves: Q&A With Aireon

Iridium® chats with partner Aireon® about their Operation Pacific Waves experience.

What attracted you to participate in Operation Pacific Waves?

Aireon provides space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) for enhanced air traffic surveillance, innovation and analytics utilizing the Iridium network. Operation Pacific Waves (OPW) was a great opportunity to showcase the diverse capabilities for the national security community that are supported by Iridium its partners.

Can you tell us more about the products you demonstrated on this expedition? How does your technology work, and what communications threads were you most eager to experience?

During OPW, Aireon demonstrated enhanced air domain awareness that is provided by the space-based surveillance and tracking of aircraft ADS-B transmissions.

What would you like readers to know about OPW and your product(s) specifically? Are there any features or unique capabilities that standout in the Indo-Pacific region?

One of the unique fields embedded within the ADS-B data set is each aircraft’s assessment of navigation integrity and GPS quality. This allows Aireon to provide a persistent global assessment of geographic areas that may be experiencing GPS interference, as well as identify aircraft that may be engaged in position spoofing and anomalous activity.
